Please join us for Parent Education night on Zoom, Thursday, February 3 at 7:30 pm, immediately following the PTA Association Meeting. Patricia Contaxis, MFT will be discussing Stress and Anxiety.
Stress is a physiological response, the body’s way of rising to a challenge. The goal isn’t to get rid of stress, but to have the right kind of stress. Our bodies react to psychologically induced stressors the same as if we were running from a predator. Actual danger is something we want to respond to. Trumped up stressors, where our thinking and our imaginations are creating the stress, are habits we want to stop. Unmitigated stress can boil over into anxiety and bring with it a host of symptoms and problems.
Patty will talk about ways to help our children differentiate between actual stressors and imagined stressors, and the importance of learning how to regulate feelings as a way to mitigate stress. The pandemic has taken the problem of managing stress to a new level. The good news is that we have within us the capacity to regulate our feelings and mitigate our stress, and to help our children learn these skills, as well.
